Introduction
The Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and information on public health and advocates for better public health in Australia.  Our 2009 conference aims to provide a platform for Queensland members and other public health professionals, involved in research, policy or practice, to explore new ways that individuals and organisations from a range of sectors can improve public health.

We are honoured to have Professor Theo Vos as our conference keynote speaker, presenting 'The economics of prevention in Australia'.  Professor Vos is the Director of the Centre for Burden of Disease and Cost-Effectiveness at the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland.  His research interests are in burden of disease analysis, epidemiology, health economics, international and tropical health.  Professor Vos’ previous research work includes leading the Victorian Burden of Disease study as well as two economic evaluation studies: ACE-Heart Disease and ACE-Mental Health.  His current research activity is characterised by two large economic evaluation projects – the ACE-Prevention project, which over the coming five years will model the cost-effectiveness of 100 prevention options for non-communicable disease in Australia; and the SPICE project in Thailand examining intervention options for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, mental disorders, lifestyle risk factors and road traffic injuries.

Update: In addition, Michael Moore, CEO of the Public Health Association of Australia will present a short advocacy forum.  Michael is a former ACT Health Minister and Adjunct Professor of Health Policy and Governance a the University of Canberra, and has substantial experience in advocating at various government levels.

This conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to network with other public health professionals and to present their work in a population health setting. Presenters do not have to be employed or associated in/with a public health organisation; however the material presented must have a public health focus.

Presentations will be accepted for oral and/or poster presentations. Oral presentations will be for 10 minutes (including questions). Poster presenters will be assigned a day and time to attend their posters.

Please read the abstract submission instructions before submitting your abstract. Submission must be via the abstract submission form.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the abstract submitted is the correct version and has been proofread. Accepted abstracts will be printed in a program/book of proceedings given to all conference attendees. If a change to a submitted abstract is required after submission, the corresponding author should contact the PHAA (Qld) conference secretariat via conference@phaaqld.org.au .

Abstracts will be accepted until 5pm, June 12th, 2009. Notification of acceptance will occur in late June.
